How To Make Videos That Get New Subscribers

Here’s something I discovered after working with videos for years.

Most video content absolutely sucks at gaining subscribers.

Some videos are funny. Some are cinematic. Some are memorable.

But if they don’t attract subscribers… who cares?

In this article, I’ll show you how to create content that attracts subscribers, engages viewers, and grows your channel.

Let’s get into it:

What NOT To Do With Your Videos

Let’s start off with a basic principle.

If I wanted you to subscribe to my channel and watch every video, would I:

  1. Dress up like a clown so I can get you to laugh first?

  2. Bring a cute animal like a puppy or a kitten to boost engagement?

  3. Make an epic title and thumbnail just to get you to click without delivering on it?

  4. Be extremely vague and unambiguous about what my channel is about?

If you’ve answered NO to all of the above we’re off to a great start.

Because that’s exactly what you wouldn’t do to get someone to click on your YouTube video and subscribe.

The First Step To Take To Make Winning Videos

So what do we do instead?

We think of our video as a personal message. Imagine you’re sitting down with a potential subscriber… what would you want to say? What questions would you ask? What points would you make to get them to take action?

Let’s try this with an example and say that we’re creating content for a channel about fashion reviews.

First thing we do is ask a simple question: ‘Who is a good viewer for this channel?’

Let’s say we decide that ‘someone owning a lot of handbags’ is a good viewer.

Now we craft our hypothetical message to this hypothetical viewer. What do we say?

How about… <drumroll>…

“Hi, want to stop buying more handbags?”

Beating The Blank Page Problem When You’re Making Winning Videos

When you start making anything it’s always daunting to be faced with that blank page. A white canvas staring you right in the face, challenging you to fill it with something useful.

That’s why we’re keeping things simple. We just start by addressing them directly about their interest. Here’s some examples:

“Are you a fashion enthusiast looking to stay up to date?”

“Do you love watching street style and outfits of real people?”

“Are you looking for your next hot favorite piece of clothing?”

“Would you like to see real people share their fashion secrets?”

We start off simple because simple works. It goes to the heart of the matter. Which is what we’re trying to do.

You’re trying to cut through the clutter and beat out the noise of all the other creators. So we take a straight line approach. Straight for the jugular.

This is a great start for your winning video. Soon, I’ll write and build on this. Stay tuned.
